Bayern Munich continues to benefit financially from its alumni network through transfer clauses. The latest example is Tanguy Nianzou, who signed with FC Sevilla after leaving Bayern Munich in 2020. Although touted as a promising talent by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Nianzou struggled to establish himself at Bayern, playing behind established center-backs Jérôme Boateng, Niklas Süle, and Lucas Hernandez before eventually moving on to Sevilla for around €20 million in 2021. The transfer included a buy-back clause and a sell-on provision that would benefit Bayern if Nianzou were to be sold again in the future.
The sell-on clause has now been triggered as Nianzou moves from FC Sevilla to OSC Lille, with the transfer fee estimated at €3-6 million. According to German news site Fußballtransfers (as reported by @iMiaSanMia_GER), Bayern Munich stands to earn up to €4 million in bonuses and a share of any future resale.
However, the exact value of such clauses can be uncertain, as illustrated by the case of academy player Jamie Lawrence. Lawrence recently transferred from WSG Tirol to OH Leuven without a transfer fee, meaning that Bayern's resale participation clause upon his departure does not apply. This move suggests that the financial benefits from such clauses are not always guaranteed and depend on various factors.
The 23-year-old center back, who has played regularly for Tirol and even captained the team at some point, chose to leave despite his current success. His reasons for the move remain unclear but could include personal or career development goals.
