Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday that the long‑term contracts of U19 defender Rayan Moumouni and striker Chris Afanou are now secured until June 30 2028 – both will stay at the FC Bayern Campus.
What happened?
The record champion signed a fresh deal for each of the 17‑year‑old prospects. Moumouni, a right‑back, joined the campus in 2019 from TSV Milbertshofen and progressed through every youth level up to U19. Last season he featured in 17 league matches for the A‑juniors and made one appearance in the Youth League. Afanou, an attacking player, moved in 2022 from FC Teutonia Munich to the youth performance centre. Despite a season marred by injuries – only nine appearances and one goal – he also earned an extension to 2028.
Why does it matter for Bayern Munich?
Head of sport and youth development Michael Wiesinger said the double extension shows the club’s belief in the two players. “Rayan stood out in the second half of the season with more playing time,” Wiesinger noted. Regarding Afanou he added: “We hope he stays healthy and we trust his potential.” The move highlights Bayern’s strategy of locking down young talent early, reducing the risk of losing prospects to rivals in the fiercely contested German youth market.
What’s next?
Both will continue training at the FC Bayern Campus this season, aiming to cement their places in the A‑juniors. Moumouni could see increased minutes after his strong second‑half performances, while Afanou hopes to showcase his attacking ability once fully fit. If either makes the jump to the professional squad or the amateur team, it will reinforce Bayern’s existing pipeline plan. Upcoming training camps and friendly matches will reveal whether they can make that step.
What does this mean for the future of the academy?
Bayern recently extended goalkeeper Jannis Bärtl, confirming a pattern of long‑term commitments for its youth. By securing contracts through 2028, the club signals a willingness to invest heavily in home‑grown players rather than selling them early. This approach may lead to a stronger flow of academy graduates into the first team in the years to come.
