Lennart Karl made his long-awaited comeback in Bayern Munich's 5-1 opening Bundesliga victory over VfB Stuttgart after a serious muscle injury. The 18-year-old German international was substituted on in the 84th minute for Harry Kane, ending an 84-day ordeal which he detailed in an interview with Bild Sport.
How did the serious injury occur?
Lennart Karl suffered the muscle bundle tear in his left thigh on June 5th in Chicago. The injury happened during the final training session before the World Cup dress rehearsal match against the United States. What initially seemed like a typical muscle problem developed into an unusually protracted issue. The rehabilitation lasted twelve full weeks, which is considered above average for this type of injury. Karl described the early phases as mentally particularly challenging. "I am very, very happy to be back. It was a very, very hard path – at first more for the head, but afterwards more physical," said the attacking player.
Who supported him during his recovery?
After the World Cup exit, Karl initially recovered on vacation with his 22-year-old girlfriend Zoe Käppele. From the end of June, he worked intensively on his comeback at the Säbener Straße training ground. A whole team stood by his side. In addition to his family and girlfriend, the Bayern Munich caregivers looked after him. His teammates also gave him backing. "The team supported me very, very well. The staff took good care of me during the hard time," Karl emphasized. This support was crucial to endure the long layoff and get fit again for the Bundesliga start.
What is his role in the current squad?
Last season, Lennart Karl already showed his potential. In 39 competitive matches, he scored nine goals and provided eight assists. These statistics underline his importance for the record champion's attack. Under the new double-coach Vincent Kompany, who is 40 himself, Karl is now looking for his fixed position. His substitution debut this season came for the 33-year-old striker Harry Kane, highlighting the competition in attack. Karl estimates his current fitness at around 90 percent. He aims to regain full match sharpness in the coming games.
What are his next targets?
A major personal goal is a call-up to the German national team under new head coach Jürgen Klopp. The 59-year-old manager must name his squad for the upcoming Nations League matches. The German team faces the Netherlands on September 24th, Greece on September 27th, and Serbia on October 1st and 4th. Karl, who has already played three international matches, hopes for consideration. To achieve that, he needs to impress in Bayern's matches, all of which can be found on our fixtures page. His comeback in the Bundesliga opener was a first important step. Now it's about gaining match practice and building on the strong performances of last season, which are also documented in our stats. The development of young players like Karl is a central building block for the club's future, as the current squad shows.
