Bayern Munich have taken initial steps towards a move for Wael Mohya. The club has made contact with the immediate circle of the 17-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach forward and discussed potential transfer terms.
Sporting director Max Eberl and technical director Christoph Freund have established the links. Mohya, who already plays for Germany's U21 side, is considered one of the league's most exciting young talents. In his last two Bundesliga appearances, he scored two goals and provided one assist. In an injury-hit season for Gladbach, he has been their only consistent bright spot.
His contract with the Foals runs until the summer of 2028. His market value is estimated at around 17 million euros. Gladbach's sporting director Rouven Schröder gave a realistic assessment of the player's future. It is clear that the youngster will not play for Borussia Mönchengladbach for his entire career, Schröder said, adding that you cannot stop that. The club is dependent on transfer surpluses.
Mohya himself confirmed contact with the Moroccan Football Association but has not yet made a decision on his international allegiance. There has been contact, the youngster said, but he could not say more about it. A decision has not yet been made.
The transfer rumours surrounding the rising star come at a time when Bayern have made an inconsistent start to the season. Their last five games have yielded one win, two draws and two defeats. Last weekend, however, they recorded a commanding home win over 1. FC Magdeburg, with Michael Olise scoring twice. Olise is currently the team's top scorer this season.
The next test is a home match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. The current standings and full fixtures schedule are available online. Alongside Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig are also said to be monitoring the young Gladbach player. Talks over a new contract with a doubled salary are reportedly already underway for Mohya.
