Michael Olise scored a late winner to give France victory in the Nations League. The Bayern Munich star netted the only goal in the 88th minute of a 1-0 win over Belgium, securing a second victory for coach Zinedine Zidane.
Olise had only been introduced as a substitute in the 77th minute. Eleven minutes later, he cut in from the right and fired a low shot into the bottom left corner past Belgium goalkeeper Lammens. "That was out of this world!" was one observer's reaction to the strike. The 24-year-old once again demonstrated his quality as a decisive player, even with limited minutes.
Zidane's second win
It was Zidane's second match and second win as national team boss. He had made eight changes to the starting lineup from the opening victory over Turkey. The first half was evenly balanced, but France took control after the break. Belgium, who had previously beaten Turkey 2-0, could find no answer under Mark van Bommel and left the pitch frustrated. The win was a deserved one for the French after their second-half dominance.
The winning goal came at an important time for the French squad. Captain Kylian Mbappé was injured in the match against Turkey and will miss the remainder of the international break. Olise seized his opportunity and fired France to the top of Nations League Group A.
Strong club form continues
The impressive performance for his country continues Olise's excellent form for Bayern Munich. In the Bundesliga, he is currently the record champions' top scorer with four goals in four appearances. Most recently, he scored a hat-trick in the 7-0 demolition of Union Berlin. Thomas Tuchel's side have recorded two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five matches (LWLDW).
After the international break, Bayern travel to face FC Augsburg on October 10th. Olise will play a key role in the attack with the confidence from his national team display, as reflected in the current team statistics.
