Uli Hoeneß backs Manuel Neuer
Uli Hoeneß, a member of the FC Bayern supervisory board, has backed Manuel Neuer as Bayern Munich's top goalkeeper. The 40-year-old goalkeeper is back for another season.
Hoeneß praised Neuer's abilities between the posts and his qualities in the dressing room. "Manuel is still one of the very best. He is absolutely world-class. He can still contribute a lot to the team over the next year. Manuel has everything you could want in terms of character. He is also a role model for the younger players. He is ambitious, and he remains incredibly important to the team," Hoeneß told Sport Bild.
It's a strong statement from Hoeneß, particularly given the debate that has developed around Neuer in recent months. Hoeneß believes that Neuer's experience, leadership and mentality remain important assets for a squad that is increasingly blending established veterans with younger players. For emerging goalkeepers and outfield players alike, having someone with Neuer's experience around the team provides an opportunity to learn from one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history.
