Michael Olise was sent off in Bayern Munich's pre-season friendly against Viking Stavanger. The winger received a straight red card for unsporting conduct in the match that finished 3-3.

It was the first dismissal of the pre-season for the 24-year-old. Commentator Peter Ahrens viewed the emotional reaction from the often cool-headed player as a positive sign. Ahrens said the sending-off was the result of a serious foul. Yet one could be grateful for this scene because you finally noticed some emotions in the player.

Context for the match and form

The 3-3 draw against the Norwegian club was the latest evidence of Munich's currently inconsistent form. In their last competitive matches, they have managed just one win with two draws and two defeats. The team showed positive signs in Stavanger, however, with Harry Kane scoring twice and Luis Díaz netting the equaliser.

For Olise, who has scored several goals in appearances this season and is currently the team's top scorer, this was the most rash moment of his Bayern career. The incident occurred during a phase where the team, after a high-scoring win, has recently recorded less convincing results.

The disciplinary action carries no further sporting consequences as it was a friendly. It does, however, focus attention on the player who holds a central role in Bayern's attack with his season goals. The coach and team must now focus on the important home game against Leipzig, for which the squad is listed on our squad page. Olise is available for that match.
